The Royal Mint launched their Queen’s Beasts bullion coin series in 2016. The Queen’s Beasts are based on the ten sculptures that were created for the Queen’s Coronation in 1953 by sculptor, James Woodford RA. Positioned to guard the entrance of Westminster Abbey, the statues featured heraldic elements combined with mythical creatures that represent the Queen’s ancestry.
The first coins featured a lion design, whilst the second features a griffin on the reverse.
These British legal tender 1oz gold coins have a face value of £100.
The obverse of the Queen’s Beasts coins show the Jody Clark portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
The reverse design displays a griffin, on top of a shield. The legend reads “GRIFFIN OF EDWARD III. 1oz FINE GOLD 999.9 2017”. This was designed by The Royal Mint engraver, Jody Clark.
Under current legislation this coin is exempt from CGT.
